A terminal tan (And a blog makeover giveaway!)

I entered this post in a blog writing contest, which awards its winner with either a donation to the Melanoma Research Fund or a gift card. The article is judged based on educational content and creativity, number of comments left on the post, and number of times people click on this link from my post.

--

I hated myself for what I was doing. I laid there placidly, the whole time counting down the minutes until I got to get out of the death machine. It felt like my skin was going to burn off.

It didn’t actually hurt, of course, If you’ve ever been in a tanning bed, you know it’s actually kind of relaxing, laying there with the music and the warmth. But if you know anything about the risks involved, then there’s at least a part of you that is bothered by the fact that you’re there.

The first and only month that I “fake-baked” was the month before my wedding. I wanted a nice, even tan for my strapless dress that could only be achieved by tanning topless, and, well, my neighbors and I just aren’t that close. As I mentioned before, I could not enjoy it.

If you know anything about the symptoms of Melanoma (skin cancer), then you know that it’s not worth the tan. WebMD cites bleeding, pain, lumps, gray skin, chronic cough, headaches, and seizures.

When you move on to the treatment, things don’t get much better. Radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy are long and excruciating treatments, and surgery is risky and leaves scars. Even after treatment, there’s no guarantee that you’ll survive.

According to the American Cancer Society, 11,590 people will die from skin cancer this year. Eleven thousand, five hundred and ninety people. And a good amount of them could have prevented it by using sunscreen, covering up, and not going to tanning salons!

Fortunately, as long as you’re not an idiot parent, your kid will have to wait until she’s 18 to run off to the tanning salon without consent. Texas just passed legislation on June 19 that says that if you’re under 18, you need special permission from your physician to fake-bake without a parent’s consent.

It seems like kind of a no-brainer to me (and apparently to a lot of other people as well): kids aren’t informed enough to make potentially harmful decisions on their own. This is why the smoking age is 18, and this is why the drinking age is 21.

Good call, Texas.

--

The part where I coerce you into to leaving comments so I might win the contest:

Win a free blog makeover from Blogs by Mandy!

The person who leaves the most comments on this post wins a free blog makeover. If you don't want a blog makeover, I'll substitute it for a set of 20 handmade, personalized thank you cards with envelopes.

Also, for every 100 comments, I will throw in another free blog makeover for the next runner up. For example, if there are 500 comments, there will be five blog makeovers (or sets of thank you cards) to give away to the top five commenters.

Updated: Contest ends at noon on July 31! I will count up the winners on August 1 July 31 at 5 p.m.

Update - Due to the fact that you people are both wonderful and cu-razy, I'm going to have to cap the giveaways at 10 blog makeovers/sets of thank you cards. I never thought it would get to a bazillion comments like it has! You can still leave as many comments as you'd like, and the person the ten people with the most comments still wins, but I can't do more then ten blog makeovers! I hope you understand. :)

Yay!! I get to be your first comment on this VERY informative and important post! You go, sister!!

I'm so with you and I feel the same way. Yes, I've tanned in the past for dances or before our vacations to Hawaii, but now...the thought of it makes me cringe. I just get sooooo worried about what will happen to me. I also am pretty particular about going out in the actual sun. Yes, I don't have much color, but praise the Lord because I don't have skin cancer!

Thank you for this post!! :) Another great reminder to those who still think tanning beds are the BEST thing ever!

Tiffany said...

I saw recently that the tanning salon a mile or so from us closed down. Yea! In general I hate to see businesses close, but THAT one I was glad to see go!

I have never been in a tanning bed and never will go in one. When I was young I was one of those kids who would be out in the sun for 5 minutes (literally) and burn. Now my kids are just about the same way. We should own stock in sunscreen companies!

I clicked on the link several times for you and will continue to do so! Hope you win!

Jessica Latshaw said...

I've only been to the tanning salon once--and that was because I got this crazy tan line from walking around outside in Santa Monica for just a short while! Anyway, I couldn't have those tan lines for ACL, so I went and got a mystic tan...I am not sure, but I think it is more like a spray tan, so maybe it's better for you...Anyway, I don't plan on tanning in a salon again! And I am pretty good at putting my sunscreen on now;-)

Jessica Latshaw said...

And p.s. I HOPE YOU WIN!!!!

Shane said...

I played golf today and used sunscreen. It was squishy on my fingers.

Melissa said...

I agree completely. I used to tan and now, as a high school teacher, I try my best to convince my students that they don't have to be tan for the prom.

{Louisiana.Bride} said...

That is awesome Texas passed that law. I have been a "event" baker for a few years now, and after our wedding in May I decided that once our membership runs out at Anytime that I am gonna try to find a good fake tanner. Other than the cancer reasons I just don't want to be a leather skinned old lady haha.

{Louisiana.Bride} said...

And the blog makeover giveaway would be awesome to win!

Jacky said...

Great post! I think it's a good mix of story-ish and plenty of education. =)

Jacky said...

I've never tanned at a salon (whatever you call it)and I don't plan on it. =) Especially not now. =)

Jacky said...

Clicked the link a couple of times for ya! =)

Mikaila said...

The person who leaves the most comments? So I should leave every sentence in a different comment? ;)

Mikaila said...

I've always wanted to know how to add tabs to my blog "header". Maybe a Home tab, a Contact tab... I know you know what I mean. :)

Mandy and Jack said...

Yep! Most comments it is! The rules say that you get points PER COMMENT. So bring 'em on!

Mandy and Jack said...

By the way, thanks everyone! This is great!

Cris and Liza said...

would love a blog makeover - don't have a clue really when it comes down to it - fingers crossed :)

Hannah said...

Oh, a blog makover would be so cool :)

Erin Sullivan said...

Facing the same dilemma for my upcoming wedding... I've been in a tanning booth once for 13 minutes before my high school prom, and vowed I never would again. I felt so foolish after leaving. This time, I've been wearing tube tops any time I'm outside, using sunscreen, and trying to build a gradual tan -- no burning and peeling which can also exponentially increase you risk of skin cancer. If I'm still too white come closer to the wedding, I'll likely get me a nice spray tan! I've bared all for a custom tan at a salon before, and I have so say, I'd much rather shamelessly bare my nekkid, HEALTHY skin to a stranger armed with a tan spray-gun than skip the embarrassment for a tanning booth and end up with a life-threatening disease later!

Mrs. Chickaloo said...

Great post!! Thanks for reminding us all about the dangers of a tan. I hope you don't mind that I linked to you in my blog!

cptjack_01 said...

I like Shane's comment

cptjack_01 said...

I have never fake baked!

cptjack_01 said...

How many posts does it take to win the prize?

cptjack_01 said...

I get lots of sunburns. Is that bad?

cptjack_01 said...

I guess I should have used sunscreen when I played golf the day before our wedding. Sorry!

cptjack_01 said...

I have not clicked the link yet.

cptjack_01 said...

Now I have!

cptjack_01 said...

Am I winning yet?

Mallory said...

Never gone to a tanning salon, becaus I'm only 17, and frankly, I don't want to.

Mallory said...

But this was a very informative post, and it's on a very relatable subject!

Mallory said...

Can you tell I'd really like to win the blog makeover? :)

cptjack_01 said...

In case any of you are wondering, Mandy is not going to let me win this contest. So, please keep leaving your posts so she wins. I am helping you all get closer to having 2 blog makeovers.

Mallory said...

I'm going to leave a bunch.

Mallory said...

Haha, for a second I thought I was competing with cptjack.

Mallory said...

It took me a second to realize that it was your husband.

Mandy and Jack said...

Jack, you are nice. And you're right, you don't get to win the prize. But you do get to bump up the numbers to make me do more blog makeovers. :)

Mallory said...

Shane is funny.

Mandy and Jack said...

So far Mallory's in the lead!

Mallory said...

Okay, I think this will be my last one for the night. I gotta get up early tomorrow!

cptjack_01 said...

I have to leave another post so that I have more than Mallory.

cptjack_01 said...

Can you tell that I am a little competitive?

Jamie McLaughlin said...

I love mystic tan :) Whenever I play Mary during our Breakfast in Bethlam production I get a mystic tan on the darkest setting and the 12 year olds that work there always look at me funny but I refuse to glow in the dark while playing the mother of our Lord ;p

Jamie McLaughlin said...

shouldn't you get like twenty minutes of non sunscreened sun a day for vitamin D?

Jamie McLaughlin said...

Maybe I will try Lindsay Lohans new tanning cream. Is that random?

Rusty and Tara said...

Thats so great you have to have parental permission to tan. I certainly was NOT that way when I was a teenager

Mallory said...

Okay, so now I totally have to beat your husband.

Mallory said...

Though I don't want to bruise his ego or anything.

Mallory said...

It can be damaging to a guy's ego when he gets beat by a girl! :)

Zac and Elizabeth said...

Wow, loved the blog posting. I'll admit that I have tanned a time or two in my lifetime (before weddings), but never again. I have lost way too many people to cancer and just recently watched my grandmother-in-law suffer through the treatment for melanoma. Treatment is over and she is starting to gain her strength back, but it is still not worth it.

Zac and Elizabeth said...

Would love a blog makeover. We just recently started a blog to keep family updated on what we are doing, but the design is so generic.

Zac and Elizabeth said...

Not sure if we can compete with Mallory for the blog makeover, but we will try.

Zac and Elizabeth said...

Okay, so this is totally a shameless plug for an event I hold near and dear to my heart, but here goes. Forget tanning and go out and walk in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. It is a fun filled overnight event that celebrates our survivors, remembers those that we have lost and then together we fight back against this deadly disease.

Zac and Elizabeth said...

How did you get into designing blogs? Are there workshops out there?

Shane said...

Thanks for saying that you liked my comment, Mr. Horny.

Shane said...

I hope I don't win. I don't like Mandy's blog designs.

Shane said...

Besides, I can do my own. Have you seen http://dogblog.shaneandcassandra.com? Not only did I design that, but I programmed it too. Let's see stupid Mandy do that!

Shane said...

No, seriously. Go look at Ajax's blog. He's adorable. And he has an audition for a Shakespeare play today. He will be auditioning for the part of "Greyhound."

Shane said...

Also, you should all be a fan of Ajax on facebook. Just do a search for "Ajax the Greyhound"

Shane said...

And since everyone here seems so motivated by getting handouts and can't make anything for themselves, Ajax will be giving away a handmade dog collar to one of his fans once he gets to 155 fans.

Shane said...

And no, Jack, you can't win the dog collar either.

Shane said...

I take back the thing about not wanting to win a blog design.

Shane said...

I hope I do win a blog design, and then I'll make Mandy design a blog about how much her blog designs suck.

Shane said...

It will be so damn ironical.

Mandy and Jack said...

Zac and Elizabeth - I LOVE Relay for Life! We do it almost every year! It's so much fun!

I'm realizing now that I'm going to actually have to COUNT all these up!

And PS - Shane, you suck more than my blog designs.

Shane said...

Why does Mallory have orange hair?

Shane said...

If I were as ugly as your blog designs, Jesus as my plastic surgeon with magical tools couldn't fix my wretchedness.

Shane said...

Sorry, that was inaccurate. I know Jesus is only half magic and that he has to use God's magic for the other half. And that's why him and Satan are angry at each other... Because Satan was jealous of Jesus' extra magic.

Shane said...

I bet Satan is so red because he doesn't use enough sunscreen.

Shane said...

It's hot there, and the only dermatologists in Hell, by definition, have to be the bad ones, right?

Shane said...

So there's your lesson kids. If you don't use sunscreen, you go to Hell. I've just proven it. Look it up, it's in the Bible.

Julia said...

wow! great post. thanks for sharing all that info.

Julia said...

i totally am searching right now for a blog makeover and frankly, i just can't afford it!

Julia said...

so i would LOVE LOVE to win a blog makeover!! :)

Julia said...

good thing we still have another week to post comments! i've tanned a few times in the past.

Julia said...

my freshman year in college my friend worked at a tanning salon so we would go there. i would only go a couple times a week, and maybe only a couple months out of the whole year.

Julia said...

then i realized this is so not good for me!!

Julia said...

i work with college kids and it BAFFLES me about how often they go tanning!! and i always say something about skin cancer and they say, yeah, i know, i know. but they keep going!

Julia said...

when are they going to learn?? probably when they get out in the "real" world like the rest of us and realize things!!

Julia said...

and also, what a WASTE of money. really? paying to fake bake? i don't know... seems wasteful to me

Mandy and Jack said...

I'm with you, Julia! And even if you get a good deal on the tanning, when you throw in the cost of the chemotherapy later, it really makes for a bad deal. ;-)

redburns said...

as a mom in texas, i'm glad my daughter will have to have my permission!! great post!

Tiffany said...

Did Jack actually leave a comment?

Tiffany said...

That is so impressive!

Tiffany said...

Some people have thought Jack is a figment of your imagination.

Tiffany said...

(Of course I didn't think that...)

Tiffany said...

(...but then I've never met this "Jack" either.)

Tiffany said...

Shane is not very nice to you.

Tiffany said...

I hope this is helping you.

Tiffany said...

You probably get an email every time you get a comment.

Tiffany said...

It's very sunny today. Don't go outside without sunscreen, folks!

Tiffany said...

Ladies, get some makeup with added SPF. That helps a little.

Tiffany said...

(Yawn!) Is it nap time yet?

Tiffany said...

RE: Jamie's comment....pediatricians are now recommending vitamin D supplements for kids because they don't get enough sun. But they DON'T want to recommend that kids go out without sunscreen.

Tiffany said...

I'm going to go click on the link some more now.

Amanda Sikes said...

I have never tanned before, unless you count after the countless hours in the sun picking, weeding, planting the garden. Good luck on the post contest.

Amanda Sikes said...

I would love a blog makeover. I have many things I want.

Amanda Sikes said...

I would like to have navigation buttons,

Amanda Sikes said...

I would like a different color scheme,

Amanda Sikes said...

I would like some info in my side bar about each family member,

Amanda Sikes said...

I would also like a button (I made one but it is pretty sorry looking),

Amanda Sikes said...

I have an idea for a blog carnival and I would like a button for it too!

Amanda Sikes said...

I love the sunshine but I am pretty careful with my kids. They wear sunscreen often because we are out in it all the time.

Amanda Sikes said...

My children are ALWAYS so tan by the end of summer. Even with sunscreen they manage to get a nice tan. But we are outside all the time in summer.

Amanda Sikes said...

I hate tanning and effects that it has on our bodies and so many young girls do it without fully realizing the impact that it is having on their health.

Jamie McLaughlin said...

Tiffiny I am not sure about giving my children a man made manufactured pill instead of just letting them swing outside for a few minutes a day. Of course I also think eating an orange is better than taking a vitamin c suppliment. I'm just wacky that way.

Amanda Sikes said...

Thank you for such a good post. I am glad to see that you are getting so many comments.
It was a great idea to throw in a "giveaway" with a post that needed comments.

Jamie McLaughlin said...

was that last comment of mine rude? I don't mean it to be. I promise I am a nice girl.

Amanda Sikes said...

I really hope I am in the lead now. A blog makeover would be awesome.

There are some great comments on here.

I am running out of things to say.

=)

Jamie McLaughlin said...

Oh my comment earlier that was 'removed by author' just said "Jack your a nut" which ofcourse is misspelled and it was late so I just deleted it. ;p

Okay...I'm going to start my comment streak now!!

Jess :) said...

This is going to be fun!

Jess :) said...

I would sooooo love some greeting cards!

Jamie McLaughlin said...

I don't need a blog makeover by the way. I have already had a totally awsome blog makeover.

Jess :) said...

Especially if you've made them!!

Jess :) said...

Yipee!

Amanda Sikes said...

Well, I am not in the lead yet.

I had not heard about the vitamin D supplement. That is interesting.

It probably comes from kids watching tv, playing video games, and being stuck inside school/daycare for hours and hours every day.

Jess :) said...

Hope you're having a great day!

Jamie McLaughlin said...

what???? wait greeting cards?? Hey I actually need some personal cards just to write notes to people. Make me some Mandy please please please.

Amanda Sikes said...

I hope that didn't offend anyone. I was just giving my opinion. Not that those things are bad it just seems that kids are gone to those places more and more now days.

Jess :) said...

I sat out in the sun today

Jess :) said...

I wore LOTS of sunscreen

Jess :) said...

I wonder if she totally ignored him and Elias because she was so into the books?!

Jamie McLaughlin said...

Jess :) said...

Have you ever tried the SPF clothing that they have now?

Jess :) said...

I've heard about it, but never tried it

Jess :) said...

i love the article, very well thought out and written.

i've never tanned fake-wise, i'm fortunate with my hispanic background that i tan quite quite easily and tend to have a little olive to me all the time.

barefootRhys said...

and yes, it would be lovely to have a blog makeover..

Tiffany said...

LOL--Jamie, I didn't mean to indicate that I agree with the supplements for kids. It's just what the pediatricians are recommending these days. If you knew me, you'd know I'm a pretty crunchy granola type. ;) However, I can't have my kids play outside for 20 minutes without sunscreen--they'd burn to a crisp. Maybe more like 5 minutes.

Sarah D said...

Your article is exactly how I felt when tanning for my wedding! While I enjoyed no tan lines and seemingly glowing skin...I felt SO guilty everytime I put on my tan lotion and stepped into the UV rays. Man, the things we'll do for "beauty." I vowed never to tan again...and your article reminded me why!

Sarah D said...

I think we need to start a new trend...where 'white' is the new cool thing to be!

I am anti-sun bathing and anti-tanning beds also. I lather my kids up with sunscreen to protect them (although you wouldn't know it by my daughter's brown skin, she gets that from me).

I posted your giveaway on my sidebar at Beautiful Blog Designs.
